Who in God's name fills out the census? I''m over 60, and have thrown every single one in the trash. The biggest way to say eff you is for every single person to do the same!

Yes, f*ck right off!

I’m currently reading ‘Vermillion Gate’, a first hand account of the Chinese Cultural Revolution written by a woman who lived through it, and in her young years was taken in by its primitive ideology. Anyone who doubts that communistic (always also materialist, atheistic (except for its own in-built religiosity) utilitarian and anti-culture) naturally gravitates toward a hellscape, even when some of those driving it are well meaning, should give it a read. It is terrifying how close the parallels are between the years and the thinking that led to that decade long cataclysm, are with those of the present time.

Western civilisation is a wonder. It has some really quite serious problems and shortcomings, but even sowed the seeds in its beginnings that will enable those to be transcended - not for a utopia, but for a real move to the next level of civilisation. (See Richard Tarnas’s masterful book, ‘The Passion of the Western Mind’, or also my own forthcoming book, of which news soon). The whole rich cultural, civilisational edifice and all its self-transcending potentials were substantially built on people being allowed to unfold their own spiritual, cultural and commercial development in private. Nothing wrong with opening doors to others (and our civilisation and its individuals have a very good record of generosity to others, including the voluntary renunciation of slavery, and fantastic progress with ending the eons-old and very universal problem of racism and other forms of prejudice). That generous spirit flourishes best when ideologues stop trying to impose their fantasies on everybody, with consistently tragic consequences. Like ‘free Western civilisation’, Communism too has a very clear track record - but it is very different.

Looks good - the world needs a comprehensive review like this. I always find it strange how many people associate everything right of centre with the atrocities of Hitler, Mussolini, Franco and yet for whom the crimes of Mao, Pohl Pot, Stalin, Ceaucescu et al (who killed immeasurably more people and caused immeasurably more suffering) are apparently invisible. And who don’t notice that even the likes of Idi Amin and Saddam Hussein were driven by essentially socialist agendas.

In fact though I’m not arguing for right wing policies. I believe we have reached the moment in history at which me must transcend the old game of left and right altogether. (At which point I’ll unashamedly plug again my forthcoming book). Nonethheless, a clear understanding of history is always a good thing, and quite a few people don’t seem to have it!
