Cars will not safely drive themselves in our lifes. Yes, in cities there will be some success but cross country is not possible as the cars need to talk to each other without latency, one issue.
The idea will embed electronics, it is just not possible. Small chips like for a dog, sure.

No I don't believe they will not die. They have some perverse ways of inducing suicide though. They are trying to get legal rights for your avatar life form. Then when the psychological assessment is that you and your avatar in your metaverse are similar they convince you to leave your world
