I'd say they are about equally harmful. Except I don't think a huge number of people are doing the hate; it's mainly chatter supplied by PR (e.g., full-time trolls). [I don't really have any way to find out how many Americans are into hating.]
Lisa, maybe there is a third element. How did the real haters start to do their hating? The emotion of hate strikes me as a pleasant one. People love to mutually hate an enemy or an upstart or whatever.
