LITHIUM BATTERY CARE GUIDE by Toronto Fire Department after Fire on the TTC by Lithium battery from ebike which was now 'easy' to put out.
Ha. David Blackmon has a great substack that covered the original ‘bomb” on the TTC. Since then the Toronto Fire Chief has made a Lithium Care Guide. You aren’t going to believe this.
Previous coverage called it a bomb. “It looked like a war zone,” the Sun reported. “‘Get out, get out,’ you can hear frantic TTC staff yelling to encourage an escape from this massive blaze on a subway car.”

HERE IS THE BATTERY SAFETY GUIDE reported here
SO THE GUIDE INCLUDES
1. Avoid excessive charging as constantly charging a device can reduce the battery’s life or cause the battery to stop working.
WHAT DON'T CHARGE TOO MUCH ???? what is the right amount? Charging not the right amount leads to bomb status.
2. Keep lithium-ion batteries at room temperature.
WHAT ROOM TEMPERATURE FOR CANADA????? so not in your garage? or heat your garage?
3. Avoid using a device in a highly damp or humid environment.
WHAT NO DAMP, NO RAIN, NO SNOW, NO HUMID. SO dehumidifier for your garage? and then never leave if it threatens, what? humidity?
4. Store lithium-ion batteries away from anything that can catch fire.
OK MAKES SENSE. BUT DOES THAT INCLUDE OTHER LITHIUM BATTERIES. it must. So no ebikes next to Teslas.
5. Stop using a lithium-ion battery and contact the manufacturer if you notice an odour, a change in colour, too much heat, a change in shape or the battery is leaking.
BETTER ALWAYS LOOK. WAIT AREN'T THEY UNDER CASINGS. IF THE CASING IS SCRATCHED AND WATER LANDS THEY EXPLODE. HOW DOES THIS WORK? what you need some kind of x-ray vision now?
Article says we won't ban them on the TTC
But how about on non-room temperature days, mornings, nights, evening. or on wet days, humid days?
There you have been warned how to care for your LITHIUM BATTERY. I assume this care would apply to your EV car too. Or just smaller EVs not more massive ones where the thermal runaway could be worse?
Well I read the Toronto Fire Department as cautioning ownership of these things outside a carefully curated microcosm? How did you read it?
The Germans are very smart. They blew up their own gas pipelines and decommissioned their nuclear reactors in order to adopt "clean" energy from batteries, wind and solar panels (at minus 25 degrees!!!!).
What a wonderful world!
