“Researchers at two institutions in Istanbul have created nanotattoos capable of passive wireless communications with nearby devices, without the need for external power sources such as batteries. The advance could lead to numerous biosensing technologies that have, up until now, been stymied by relying on a bulky external power source or wired communications.
The backscattering-based nanotattoo sensor (BNTS) tattoos were developed by Kristen D. Belcastro, a lecturer at Yeditepe University, in Istanbul, and Onur Ergen, the vice chair of research and development at the Istanbul Technical University’s department of electronics and communication. The tattoos are composed of two inks—a zinc oxide ink containing embedded nanowires atop a graphene aerogel conductive ink. The two inks are painted onto the skin simultaneously via separate needles. Ergen says there is also some aerogel in the ink containing the nanowires, though at a lower ratio than that in the lower layer, and as a result, the two inks bond on contact.
The devices’ wireless communications rely on the creation of electrical signals from piezoelectric activity, made possible as the tattoos change shape, which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. The tattoos’ wireless networking infrastructure uses a smartphone to bounce signals off the tattoo and receive data, with a broadband modem as a helper device. in the researchers’ work recently published in IEEE Electron Device Letters, the system analyzed range of motion. However, Ergen said there are many more use cases they are exploring.”

Digitize the Human Body by Backscattering Based Nano-Tattoos: Battery-Free Sensing

Abstract:
Artificial intelligence (AI) lead a new era in remote health monitoring and preventive care, by making wearable electronics, specifically electronic skin, monumental in the future of healthcare. However, remote data collection from these sensors still largely relies on external circuits such as amplifiers, analog to digital converters, and batteries. This extra layer of circuity results in bulky systems, which greatly limits the application of these sensors and forces them to only work at certain places on the human body for limited time, such as only wrist. Here, we present an original technique for producing ink-based nano-tattoos that can be applied anywhere on the human body in various shapes and sizes and transmit data without requiring any external circuit elements, including batteries, by utilizing backscattering communication principles. Ink of nano-tattoos based on ZnO nanowires embedded in graphene aerogels can analyze and track quality of human body movements anywhere there is an ambient wireless signal and a smart phone. This method turns every surface into a potential sensor, digitizing the human body.

I. Introduction
With the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques, flexible piezotronic strain sensors and nanogenerators are gaining popularity as instruments for remote health monitoring, electronic skin, and preventive care applications [1]. Various interesting designs are already proposed and studied in the literature [2], however, all of these designs depend critically on external electronic components, such as amplifiers, analog to digital converters, and, more importantly, batteries, to transmit and receive data. Furthermore, the application of a fixed voltage is often necessary to obtain accurate and reliable results [3], [4]. This results in two major drawbacks; (i) It makes the overall system bulkier and more expensive, limiting the application of these sensors to specific locations on the human body, primarily the wrist. (ii) the battery dependent architectures are not suitable for constant human health monitoring due to the necessity of frequent charging, creating inconsistency in data collection. It is very important to have a sensor that can send data without requiring any external circuit components with battery free operation. For this reason, considerable research and development has been invested in the area of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) [5], [6] and backscattering [7], [8] based systems, however, their challenges on scavenging power, round-trip path loss, and rapid radio frequency (RF) fading with bad signal-to-noise ratio result in accuracy and reliability issues. It is critical to ensure robust wireless communication between the reader and backscatter tag for a reliable data transfer to be achieved. To do this, a sensor depends on a power source to boost its signal, broadening the data collection range, which mainly means a battery dependent system defeating the purpose of battery free operation.
